Do you ever wonder, “Just what did my preschooler do at school today?” Well, in October we were busy following the natural rhythms of the seasons and taking our cues from the natural world. We started exploring seeds, which are spreading out into the world this time of year. We collected wild seeds for seed bracelets and noticed edible seeds like nuts and beans. We planted beans and watched them grow, and even made a seed mosaic. Our class graph of apple seeds was an amazing introduction to graphing and grouping.
We continued after our week-long break with a look at Fall weather and began observing reporting the daily weather changes. We told stories and took turns helping felt “friends” dress for a day outside exploring. We learned that C is for “cool” and “cold” and that D is for “deer”, an
animal busy growing antlers in the fall. We touched real deer antlers and made some antler art with sticks we collected.
Who can forget that E is for “eat” and pumpkins can be yummy when transformed into muffins we make ourselves! We used all our senses with pumpkins and noticed all the orange around us in nature. Nocturnal animals were part of class, too, and we moved our bodies like the creatures of the night. We even learned how we can help night dwellers and how important they are.
Finally we explored leaves from deciduous trees and noticed their shapes and colors. We learned the letter F and that “fall” can be a season as well as something leaves do. We read “Leaf Man” and made lots of leafy art.
I am so happy with our choice of preschool and Luke absolutely loves it. It's so bizarre that he now learns things without our presence or knowledge and we are just tickled with the things he shares with us.
Christmas is all Luke can think about lately. He's been watching a Caillou Winter Video with a Christmas/Holiday episode and picking out Christmas books to read. We've been talking a lot about it trying to figure out who is buying for who this year. And he's been busy talking about what he wants. He woke up to go to the bathroom the other night and as he and Randy went back to his bed I heard Luke say, "we need to figure out who we are buying for this year." I've told him several times we are buying for Bogie Grandpa and Gramma this year to help me remember but the question is still heavy on him mind.
