Luke, Adyson and I hiked up the Summit Lake trail today. The drive up was hilarious. You drive all the way out to Carbonado, over the rickety looking very high Carbon River Bridge and nearly 8 miles up this gravel, pothole filled logging road. Luke and Adyson were laughing nervously and cracking jokes all the way up. Fear got the better of Luke a couple of times and he cried which lead me to bust out the "when I was a girl" stories about how grandpa used to take us up scary snowy logging roads in search of the perfect Christmas tree scaring the daylights out of us. It distracted him enough to send him back to giggles. The kids cheered when we finally got to the trailhead and there were a few other cars there. They didn't think they were going to see anyone else. And seriously, the road was 100% safe even in the little VW.
The trail is only 2.5 miles but seemed like it gained quite a bit of elevation (1,200 ft). The last 3/4 of a mile was said to be through the snow and a bit hard to follow, I'm not sure we didn't get that far :) We encountered several large patches of snow along the way, some we had to merely walk through, others we had to climb over. Not very far up we encountered this lovely little lake. A couple coming down the trail told us it was Twin Lake. We hiked on quite a bit further before turning back around and sitting on the bridge for a snack.
